Holy Activism: Where Spirituality and Justice Meet
Many of the great social advancements in our nation have come about as individuals or groups put faith and spiritual values to work in order to address injustice. The abolition of slavery, the end of child labor, and civil rights are just a few examples of holy activism – the work that arises out of the human capacity to express core spiritual values on behalf of the vulnerable, the poor, the mistreated. Too often spirituality and social justice advocacy are treated like polar opposites, one being about the “inner” life, the other about the “outer” life. What happens when the two are integrated into a dynamic whole? How might such integration bring new vitality and meaning to life?
