2021 Lenten Book Study/Discussion Groups

Call It Grace: Finding Meaning in a Fractured World
by Dr. Serene Jones

Lent is a period of 40 days (not including Sundays) from Ash Wednesday to the Saturday before Easter. Many Christians see Lent as an invitation into deeper reflection and commitment to God. At Davis Community Church, we enter into this season of Lent during a year when we have been stretched more than ever to find meaning and the relevance of what is sacred in a fractured and wounded world. In Call It Grace: Finding Meaning in a Fractured World, Serene Jones demonstrates a way to do this beautifully by weaving her own faith journey from rural Oklahoma to her historical leadership of Union Theological Seminary with Christian teachings on hatred, forgiveness, mercy, justice, death, sin, and grace. Drawing on the wisdom of prominent theological voices–Soren Kierkegaard, Reinhold Niebuhr, John Calvin, James Baldwin, James Cone, Luce Irigaray, Saint Teresa of Avila–Jones invites readers to reflect on the meaning of our lives, the world, and the divine with an intimate, humble, and prophetic voice that is accessible for modern readers.

We hope that this book will strengthen our community with the courage to face the deep fissures of our age and stimulate our imaginations toward a future filled with ancient sacred truths.

We are gearing up to have a lovely Lenten experience this year! You will have many choices for small groups and also a drop-in group with Pastor Chris — all on the Zoom platform. Our book study will begin the week of February 15th and run for the 6 weeks of Lent. We hope you will join us!
