Cafe Justo: Coffee With a Helping of Justice
On a recent trip to the border at Douglas, AZ and Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico, our delegation asked our hosts, Mark Adams and Miriam Maldonado, “What can we do? How can we be supportive of your mission?”
The answer: Buy coffee!
Café Justo is more than just coffee. Café Justo is a grower-0wned cooperative based in Chiapas Mexico, formed to address the poverty and migration from Mexico to the U.S.A. The coffee is shade-grown, 100% organic coffee. All revenues go to the grower’s cooperative in Chiapas and the communities involved in the roasting and shipping of coffee, including Agua Prieta, home to Frontera de Cristo, our partners in ministry on the border.
Coffee growers receive a fair price for their coffee and medical and retirement benefits. The dynamic is simple: when the coffee farming community can sustain itself there is no need for migration, which is dangerous. Purchases help support spin-off jobs and economic development south of the border as this enterprise continues to grow. In short, it is all good!
We plan to provide a coffee ordering opportunity on the second Sunday of each month. We expect the cost to be approximately $12 per full 16 oz. pound. The cost will vary depending on shipping and payment will be due at the time of pick up. We can accept both cash and checks but prefer checks.
