Memorial: Rev. Joy Dorf

Joy Halcyon MacDonald Dorf, was born December 9, 1937, in Lawrence, northern New York on a dairy farm, the oldest child of Leonard and Gladys MacDonald.  She attended college at SUNY Potsdam, earned a teaching degree, and met and married Richard “Dick” Dorf.  In the first years of their marriage, Joy taught elementary school in various locations.  When the couple settled in Los Gatos, CA, she devoted her time to motherhood, raising daughter Christine (born in 1962) and Renee (born in 1964).  The family moved to Athens, Ohio in 1969, returning to California and settling in Davis in 1972.  That same year, Joy enrolled in a Master of Divinity program at San Francisco Theological Seminary (SFTS) and earned a degree in 1976.  She held the position of Associate Pastor for over 10 years at Davis Community Church. She then served a variety of churches in Northern California as interim Pastor and held a position at SFTS in Continuing Education.  In her retirement, she continued to mentor, serve and contribute to the local community, and together with Dick, contribute to many educational institutions.  Joy died May 19, 2021, after having just recently moved into the University Retirement Community.

Joy is survived by daughter Renee Schafer (husband Scott), son-in-law Steve Boilard (wife Karen), grandson Ian Boilard (wife Katelyn), grandson Kyle Schafer (wife Kiya), grandson Graham Schafer (wife Tamazin), and granddaughter Kaitlyn Schafer.
