Gnostic Spirituality
A number of Christian groups in the second century understood themselves differently from what became orthodoxy. Many of these groups called themselves, “Gnostics," which for orthodoxy was equivalent to heresy. With the discovery of the library at Nag Hammadi in the 1940s, and its subsequent publication, our view of Gnosticism has changed. In class we will look at the spirituality that inspired the Gnostic Christians and focus especially on the most popular movement founded by Valentinus.
